Been caught speeding in London? You’d better hope that you were travelling at 36mph in a 30mph zone. Any higher, and you’ll get points on you licence and a fine; any lower and you’ll get points with the option to contest. But if it’s the magic 36mph, you could now be offered a place on a ‘speed awareness workshop’.

Transport for London (TfL) and the Metropolitan Police are following the example set by Thames Valley and Northumbria Police, which use similar schemes to educate speeding drivers.

The workshop, which costs £72 and lasts two-and-a-half hours, aims to “change drivers’ attitudes to excessive and inappropriate speeds by informing them of the impact that speed can have in a collision.”

Chris Lines, head of the London Road Safety Unit, said: "Education plays a vital role in changing driver's attitude towards excessive speed. Most of us don't break the speed limit deliberately, but few of us truly appreciate the dangers of driving even a few miles an hour above the speed limit.”

We can’t see why those travelling at 36mph should get off more lightly than someone travelling at 34mph, but we’re all for a more enlightened approach to speeding.
