Just as Mayor Ken Livingstone has declared he’d like to make the London congestion charge a pollution charge, the Nice car company has unveiled its emissions-free Mega City electric car in London.

As its name suggests, the Mega City is designed for use in the city, with electric motors giving it a top speed of over 40mph and a range of 40-50 miles from the lead-acid batteries. It can be charged from a standard 240v mains socket, or at one of a growing number of free charging points in London.

Developed and built in France, the Nice is around the same size as a Smart Fortwo – an electric version of which is also being launched at the motor show.

The Nice, which will only be delivered to buyers within the M25, is exempt from the existing congestion charge in London, and also exempt from road tax. Although the Nice has a starting price of £9995, its makers claim it is one of the cheapest vehicles to run, with a cost per mile of around 1.5 pence.
