Parking may be about to get a bit easier - local authorities are to be stopped from clamping for minor infringements.
The move is part of the Department for Transport’s draft guidance to councils. It says that ‘raising revenues should not be an objective of parking enforcement’ and states that the objective should be improving traffic flow.
Persistent offenders – those with three or more parking offences – will be placed on a national database. Once clamped, they will have to pay all their outstanding fines before their car is released.
This is the start of the consultation period, which lasts for three months. Motorists can contribute to this and the Department says all submissions ‘will be considered carefully’. You can see the proposals at www.dft.gov.uk.
The guidance will come into force next summer.
