More searingly fast cars are being lined up for Autocar's attempt on the London Speed Record on July 15.

The Mercedes SLR McLaren, Porsche 911 Turbo, Corvette Z06, Ford GT and Bentley Continental Flying Spur are all confirmed as runners.

The man behind the wheel will be Autocar's editor-at-large Steve Sutcliffe, who will attempt an entry into the Guinness Book of Records on the landing strip of London City airport.

"My thoughts for the day are very simple", says Steve: "Do not end up in the water!"

"I'll be entering the main runway at 70-80mph and then keeping the car nailed until as close to the end of the runway as I dare. With the Thames in view I shall not be attempting any heroics, but I've got 200mph in my sights."

The London Speed Record comes ahead of the British Motor Show, which runs from 20-30 July. Autocar.co.uk will bring you exclusive coverage of this unique event.
