A new study has found that drivers of 4x4s take more risks at the wheel.
A team from Imperial College London observed 41,126 motorists, noting the type of vehicle they drove and whether or not they were wearing seatbelts or talking on a hand-held mobile phone.
The study showed that drivers of SUVs were four times more likely to be using a hand-held mobile phone while driving than drivers of ordinary cars (8.2 per cent versus 2.0 per cent). SUV drivers were also more likely not to be wearing seatbelts, at 19.5 per cent versus 15 per cent.
The investigation suggests that 4x4 drivers feel safer in their larger, taller vehicles, and therefore are more likely to flout safety laws.
