Ignore, if you can, the slightly naff black wheels on this VW Golf GTI - this is the 30th birthday edition, for which Volkswagen has given a similar number of extra horses to its famous hot hatchback.

The birthday boost takes the Golf GTI to a Focus ST-topping 230bhp - a figure that its fine chassis should be capable of exploiting. That aside, though, the modifications are mainly cosmetic - colour-coded front and rear bumpers, subtle graphics, those 18in black alloy wheels, leather sports seats and, wait for it, special '30th anniversary' floormats.

Hold your breath, though - there's no word yet on whether the car, officially released as a concept, will make it into production. But VW did release special editions for the Golf's 20th and 25th birthdays, so VW enthusiasts will have high hopes that this most potent of GTIs will end up on UK roads before too long.
