Honda is killing off the Insight, the car that took it into the 'green' market over six years ago.

The Insight two-seater was one of the first hybrids on the market, but its place at the head of the eco-friendly pack has been grabbed by Toyota's more practical Prius. In the crucial US market, just 320 Insights have been sold so far this year, compared to over 30,000 Priuses.

Honda's first-gen eco-car has also been overtaken by its Civic hybrid, which uses a more compact version of the same Integrated Motor Assist technology. The Insight is no longer on sale in the UK.

Richard Colliver, the vice-president of Honda in America, said, 'Production will stop in September of this year and be discontinued.' But he added that a replacement - likely to be sub-Civic in size - was planned for 2009.
