VW raids the bargain bin with the Fox

28 April 2006

Today is launch day for the Volkswagen Fox in the UK.

The replacement for the Lupo sits below the Polo as VW’s entry-level model. The Fox comes either with VW’s 55bhp 1.2-litre or 74bhp 1.4-litre petrol. There are two trim levels, but the Fox is only available as a three-door.

Whereas the Lupo was famously expensive, the cheapest Fox offers a CD player, two airbags, ABS and a 1E insurance rating for £6,590 on the road.

It’s worth bearing in mind that £7499 will get you into a 91bhp Suzuki Swift and that £6995 is what Fiat wants for a 60bhp Panda.

If you want more kit, such as a sliding rear seat, you must go up to the Urban trim level which costs £7190 in 1.2-litre form and £7995 with the 1.4-litre engine.

Until 30 September, all Fox customers will get free servicing for three years or 30,000, whichever comes sooner.
