Caparo's T1, the 1000bhp-per-tonne road and track car, has been seen in the metal for the first time at the Top Marques show in Monaco.

Prince Albert unveiled the new prototype, which has been designed by two ex-McLaren engineers. The T1 weighs less than 500kg but uses a V8 engine producing 500bhp. Caparo is claiming that can hit 60mph in 2.5sec, 100mph in five seconds and go from 0-100-0 in less than 10sec. It also produces enough downforce and grip to result in up to 3g during cornering.

Caparo Vehicle Technologies, the firm set up to produce the car when parent company Caparo bought out the project a few months ago, says that it has already taken a 'substantial' number orders for the T1, and that demand is already close to its supply capacity.

The firm's managing director Mark Findlay said, 'We completed the build of the first prototype in less than seven weeks to meet the show deadline, which is something of a record even in our industry. We will now build a second prototype for a busy test and development schedule to ensure the car meets our quality and reliability goals. We have started to recruit the engineers and technicians we need to grow the company and our intention is to start building production cars later this year for delivery to customers in 2007.'
