British digger manufacturer JCB has announced plans to go after a Land Speed Record at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats later this year.
The JCB Dieselmax has been designed to aim for the record of World's fastest diesel-powered automobile. It uses two 4.4-litre, standard engine-based motors, each tuned to produce 750bhp and each using its own transmission. The car is nine metres long and weighs 2700kg - JCB is hoping that it can crack 300mph.
Andy Green, current overall Land Speed Record holder with Thrust SSC, has been signed up to drive the Dieselmax. The benchmark he'll be aiming for is 235.767mph, set by Virgil W Snyder and the Thermo King Streamliner back in August 1973.
