Lexus has boosted power and economy in its RX SUV range by replacing the three-litre engine with a new 3.5-litre V6.

The RX350's unit produces 272bhp, almost 70bhp up on the outgoing model. That allows the 4x4 RX to accelerate to 62mph in 7.8sec, with an electronically-limited top speed of 124mph. It's also more economical than the old model - 25.2mpg in the combined cycle is an improvement of eight per cent.

Lexus has tweaked the RX's five-speed automatic transmission, and changed the specification of the centre differential. The power steering has also been altered to give greater assistance a low speeds - a nod, perhaps, to the common problem of parking the RX in suburban spaces.

Other changes to the RX include greater soundproofing and a quicker satellite navigation system.

The new models went on sale yesterday, April 18. Prices start from £31,890.
