This brutal-looking concept car is Saab's Geneva show-stopper, the Aero X.

The Scandinavian manufacturer has created the new machine to showcase its technology and give a strong indication to its future direction. The Aero X is powered by a 400bhp BioPower engine, using 100 per cent bioethanol fuel. Its low-slung cabin has no windscreen pillars - indeed, the two-seater's cabin is said by Saab to be inspired by its jet aircraft.

With lightweight carbon fibre bodywork and four-wheel drive, the Aero X ought to be rapid. Saab says its simulations predict a 0-62mph time of just 4.9sec and an artificially-limited top speed of 155mph.

'This study shows how the strength of the Saab brand heritage can inspire bold, innovative design,' says Bryan Nesbitt, Executive Director, GM Design Europe. 'As we move forward with new Saab product, we will remain focused on carefully cultivating this brand equity in the context of Scandinavian design values.'

Saab has no plans to put the car into production, but its shape should hint at the next-generation 9-5, which is not due in showrooms for at least two years.
