Justine Greening has replaced Phillip Hammond as the secretary of state for transport. Greening, MP for Putney, Roehampton and Southfields, moves from her previous role of Treasury economic secretary to become the 14th transport secretary in 23 years. She has yet to comment on any proposed policies.
Hammond has become defence secretary following Liam Fox’s resignation on Friday.
Elected to parliament in 2005, Greening is best known for opposing Labour’s plans to build a third runway at Heathrow airport. She also has a strong history of voting in favour of climate change prevention policies.
Roads issues she will take on include the proposed 80mph speed limit and promoting a wider uptake of electric vehicles.
When Hammond took the transport secretary role in May 2010, he pledged to end Labour's "war on motorists" by clamping down on speed cameras, clamping firms and plans for road charging.
