New car registrations dropped 6.2 per cent year-on-year in June; Fiesta is best seller again

New car registrations fell 6.2 per cent year-on-year in June, a fall that the Society of Motor Manufacturers (SMMT) said was in line with industry expectations.

A total of 183,125 units were registered in the UK last month, and the SMMT expects a total of 1.93 million units to be registered by the end of 2011.

“June new car registrations continued to perform in line with industry expectations with robust demand in the fleet sector and a relatively weak retail market,” said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

“The balance of demand makes this a tough time for vehicle manufacturers and their dealer networks.

“Slow, but steady economic growth in the second half of the year should see volumes increase, although the overall market is still expected to be around 1.93 million units.”

The UK’s best-selling car in June was again the Ford Fiesta. A total of 8829 units of the Fiesta were sold, which was enough to keep the new Ford Focus in second place with a total of 8055 units sold. The Vauxhall Corsa was Britain’s third best-selling car in June, with 7805 units registered.
