Jeep's SRT8 will hit 60mph in 4.8sec and is the company's fastest model to date

Jeep’s fastest ever model, the Grand Cherokee SRT8, has made its official debut at the New York motor show.

The hardcore Cherokee uses a new 6.4-litre V8 engine, which produces 459bhp and 365lb ft of torque – 44bhp and 45lb ft more than the previous version’s 6.1-litre unit – and should be good for a 60mph sprint time of 4.8sec. Top speed is limited to 155mph.

Despite its performance increase, Jeep claims that the new SRT8 will be more fuel efficient by up to 13 per cent when compared to its predecessor, thanks to a new active valve exhaust system, which allows four-cylinder operation only over a wider rev-range.

On the inside, the SRT8 features DVD and MP3 and new steering wheel-mounted gear selectors, with options for the car including 19-inch alloys, a tinted sunroof and electric boot.

Chrysler also unveiled the all-new 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8. It uses the same powertrain as in the Jeep, but has a top speed of 175mph and an estimated 25 per cent improvment in fuel economy thanks to the same active valve exhaust system revisions.
