First spy pics of Citroën's “luxurious grand tourer” in testing ahaead of Shanghai debut in April

These are the first spy pictures of the new Citroën DS5, the third model in Citroën’s stylish sub-brand.

The heavily disguised prototype gives nothing away about the styling of the DS5, but it does reveal a high-riding estate-crossover that fits Citroën’s previous descriptions of the car as a “luxurious grand tourer”.

The five-seat DS5 will be based on the current C5 but “not necessarily in terms of design and look”, insiders have revealed to Autocar.

Like the DS4 that will be revealed in final production form at the Geneva motor show in March, the DS5 will ride higher than the car it is based on and its sleek coupé profile will draw inspiration from Citroën’s Hypnos concept.

The difference between DS4 and DS5 will be greater than the gap between DS3 and DS4, and Citroën insiders promise it will be a “significantly different execution” of the DS concept.

The design brief for the DS5 was to create a car that stood out above all others when queuing in a line of traffic. The DS5 will also share the Hypnos’s diesel-electric Hybrid4 powertrain. A 2.0-litre HDi engine with around 200bhp will power the front wheels, with a 37bhp electric motor powering the rear wheels.

The DS5 will make its motor show debut as a concept in Shanghai in April and it is expected to follow in full production guise at the Frankfurt motor show in the autumn.
