Euro NCAP's safest cars for 2010 included the BMW 5-series and Kia Sportage

Euro NCAP has announced the five best performing cars for 2010.

Selected as safest cars of their categories, these vehicles achieved a high overall score and attained the coveted five star rating:

The winning car in the executive category was the BMW 5-series, winner of the small family category went to the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, supermini category was won by the Honda CR-Z, small off-road winner was the Kia Sportage and the best in class in the small MPV category was the Toyota Verso.

Last year, Euro NCAP crash tested 29 vehicles, 65 per cent of which reached the five star rating, compared to 90 percent in 2009. This decrease of 25 per cent is attributed to toughening Euro NCAP standards for the desirable five star award in 2010.

Incidentally, NCAP’s poorest results of 2010 were achieved by the Citroen Nemo with three stars and by the Landwind CV9 which received only two stars.

Euro NCAP is now performing electronic stability control (ESC) tests as part of the overall assessment and since 2009, Euro NCAP requires ESC systems to be fitted as standard and will from now on be measuring its performance when testing vehicles.
