Audi’s petrol-electric A6 will be only the firm’s second production hybrid when it arrives in 2012.
Its powertrain is currently being adapted from the Q5 hybrid’s. It mates a 208bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with a 44bhp, 156lb ft electric motor sandwiched between the piston engine and eight-speed ’box.

Electric power is blended with the petrol engine’s via two wet clutches to produce 354lb ft of torque and 241bhp. Drive is through the front wheels only.
Audi’s parallel hybrid system draws electrical power from an air-cooled 1.3kWh lithium-ion battery. The car should be capable of just under two miles of running on battery power alone, at up to 42mph.

As was the case with the Q5 hybrid I expect that this will be targeted for markets that do not buy diesels. 2 miles on hybrid power alone, that is hardly going to get people excited about the future of hybrids.
