First images of the new luxury sports car in testing near the Nürburgring

These are the first spy pictures of the new Mercedes SL63 AMG in testing.

The new SL63 AMG, caught near the Nürburgring, is sporting a heavy disguise but Mercedes has made it clear that the front-end styling of the new CLS will carry over to all its models, including the next SL due in 2012.

Mercedes SL test mules have been spied before, but this model’s identity as the SL63 AMG is given away by its extra front camouflage hiding larger air intakes.

The front spoiler is also different to previous mules, while AMG alloy wheels cover larger disc brakes, as well as new, larger callipers, at the front and rear. Quad exhausts are hidden by heavy disguise at the rear.

The SL63 AMG will be powered by Mercedes’ new twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 that’s already been confirmed for its S63 AMG and CL63 AMG models.

With 536bhp at 5500rpm and 590lb ft at 2000rpm in its standard state of tune, the new engine develops 18bhp and 126lb ft more than its predecessor.

As part of a new marketing strategy instigated by Mercedes-Benz, buyers can also specify a performance package that lifts the CL63 AMG’s output to 563bhp and 633lb ft. A similar package is likely to be offered for the SL63 AMG.

Channeling the new engine’s reserves to the rear wheels will be AMG’s seven speed MCT (multi clutch transmission).

The proportions of the new SL are expected to be similar to the current model's, although it will be considerably lighter through the use of more aluminium in its construction. The engine range is likely to be an evolution of the current model's.

Key components, such as the suspension and electrical systems, could be shared with the SLS supercar to keep development costs down.
