The second-generation Merc CLS has been spotted without disguise

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS has shed most of its disguise two months out from its world debut at the Paris motor show.

The latest prototypes, sporting strategically placed black tape but none of the earlier form-altering cladding, reveal better than ever the heavily sculptured shape and reinterpreted detailing of the new four-door coupé.

This car also carries the AMG styling kit, helping to beef up the CLS’s appearance. Longer and wider than today’s first-generation CLS, the new model rides on a platform shared with the latest E-class, with a 2870mm wheelbase and appreciably wider tracks.

The increased dimensions provide the new car with added accommodation and luggage capacity, according to Mercedes sources. They also confirm the CLS will continue to receive its own unique dashboard and interior trim treatment. As with its predecessor, the latest CLS is also planned to receive a four-seat layout with two individual rear seats.

Among the engines planned for the upcoming CLS are two new direct-injection petrol units. They include a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 in the CLS350 CGI, with 306bhp — 14bhp more than the current unit.

Also planned from the outset is an updated 3.0-litre V6 common-rail diesel in the CLS350 CDI, delivering 265bhp.

Heading up the latest line-up will be the CLS63 AMG. It runs a new twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 that has been tuned to deliver around 555bhp.

It will get the same seven-speed MCT (multi-clutch transmission) introduced to other AMG models, including the new CL63 AMG.

This look great. Audi (A7) this is how it should be done. Who wants a large hatchback ?

I think this CLS looks a lot more sleeker and dynamic, it will also I feel be the more sporty drivers car then the A7. The A7 looks more like a GT car with 4 doors and will be more suited to motorways and the autobhans.

I do like the A7 look audi all look nice at the moment nice interiors and design make it hard not to like for everyday use.

It allows them to bring in smaller versions of the same concept lower down in the range. :-P The 'BLS' is coming, apparently!

I see... But its not like the CLS was a small car to begin with. At least with a limo you let the chauffer worry about parking a thing of that bulk, but the CLS is the kind of car that one would probably drive oneself. Too big for my garage though. And almost too big for my street...
