First pictures and details of the electric version of Mercedes SLS leak onto the internet

The first pictures and details of the Mercedes SLS AMG E-cell concept have leaked onto the internet.

The all-wheel drive prototype is reportedly powered by four electric motors, which each rev to 12,000rpm. Total power output of the four motors is 519bhp, while 649lb ft of torque is produced.

The E-cell can get from 0-62mph in a claimed 4.0sec.

Its lithium polymer batteries are split between a box behind the cockpit and the centre tunnel.

Other modifications include a new rear diffuser to produce more downforce, while multi-link front suspension with push-rod dampers now features at the front due to the extra space taken up by the front electric motors.

Production of the E-cell is set to begin in 2013.

If Autocar found the petrol version cold and soulness, god knows what they'll make of the E-Cell without that stunning V8.

I agree. It is an opportunity to style something completely different. Look at the Fisker products for example. An EV should look like the red Lexus in the film Minority Report, or the BMW Vision Concept.

The Prius and Insight shout hybrid simply from their shape, AMG should follow the same thread.
