Petrol turbo and revised diesels join range; dual-clutch 'box offered too

Ford is giving the Mondeo a mid-life powertrain revamp, slotting in its Ecoboost turbocharged petrol motor, improving the diesel line-up and offering its dual-clutch Powershift transmission on the car for the first time.

The new 2.0-litre Ecoboost unit produces 200bhp at 5500rpm, and delivers 221lb ft of torque between 1750rpm and 4500rpm. It takes the Mondeo from 0-62mph in 7.9sec and on to a top speed of 144mph (141mph for the estate).

The unit, which comes as standard with Ford's dual-clutch transmission, also returns up to 36.6mpg and emits 179g/km of CO2; Ford claims that this makes it 19 per cent cleaner than the old 2.3-litre auto on the CO2 front, but 25 per cent more powerful.

The Mondeo is also getting revised versions of the Duratorq TDCI diesel motors, producing 113bhp/221lb ft, 138bhp/236lb ft and 161bhp/251lb ft. Ford claims that the units all deliver 53.2mpg; that's a match for the old Mondeo Econetic, so that model has now been scrapped.

The Powershift dual-clutch gearbox is also available as an option on the 138bhp and 161bhp diesel models. It nudges fuel economy down slightly on both cars, to 50.4mpg.

The Ecoboost Mondeos start at £22,095, while the diesels start at £18,995 for the 113bhp unit and £19,895 for the 161bhp model.

When you're a company car user in middle management, the longer the name the better it is to show off to Bob in Accounts who only got a mondeo 2.0tdci duratorq zetec...

It's the natural result of badge inflation from the simple days when plebs would get the Sierra L, but their boss would be handed a shiny GL and the big boss a spiffy Ghia....

Re: Ford Mondeo gets new engines

Nice of Ford to charge £1000 extra for the same car but loaded with different software parameters.

When are people going to wise up to this? It's not like the detuned versions are any more economical either.
