Flavio Briatore has admitted he may return to F1 - but it won't be until at least 2013 after he and Renault's former technical boss, Pat Symonds, agreed a deal with the FIA to stay out of the sport until that date.
The pair also agreed not to work in any other competitions registered on the FIA calendars until the end of the 2011 season, as part of an out-of-court settlement with the sport's governing body.
However, former Benetton and Renault chief Briatore says he will not return to manage a team.
He told Italy's Sky Sport 24: "I will never come back to Formula One as team manager, but perhaps [I will return] after 2012 in another role."
F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that Briatore could return to F1 as a series promoter.
Briatore stepped down from his roles as Renault F1 boss and chairman of football club QPR after the scandal involving Nelson Piquet Jr’s crash in the 2008 Singapore GP.
The FIA is working on an appeal to reinstate the lifetime ban.
