Four-door model sports huge rear wing to improve handling and stability

A four-door Subaru Impreza WRX STI has been revealed on the second day of the New York motor show.

It is the first time in three years Subaru has offered a four-door version of the performance car, and the first time ever that Subaru has offered the STI in four and five door body styles.

The STI also gets modified settings, including stiffer bushings, stiffer springs, and thicker anti-roll bars front and rear. It's also lighter, with the new 18-inch wheels 17.6lb lighter.

Subaru also claims the giant rear wing aids high-speed stability and on-the-limit handling.

The engine remains unchanged, offering 305bhp and 290lb ft of torque, but a change in the exhaust silencing makes the car "meaner and louder" according to Subaru.

It's not clear yet whether the saloon will ever go on sale in the UK. Importer International Motors is currently deciding whether or not to import it.

It may not be an obvious choice for most buyers, but this four-wheel-drive, sub-£20k hatch does have merit

I dont quite understand this paragraph...first time in three years or first time ever? As someone said above, the Impreza has been available as a four door for ages (though obviously the saloon has been on hold since 2007). Hasn't the saloon always been four-door though? The old "sportswagon" (the name here in Japan) was also a five-door. I'm confused... Anyhoo, I'm interested to see some better pictures. Though I am mainly concerned about the interior being a little basic, as has been the norm up to now. If it wasn't for that, I would have bought one.

I think they probably mean that it's the first time Subaru have offered the STI version as both a saloon and a hatchback in Europe. In its current guise, we've only had the 5-door hatchback over here since 2007. Before that, we only had the previous 4-door saloon and the more basic 5-door Estate, so it'll be the first time the two body styles are available in STI guise. Hope that helps a bit :) and I don't think we'll see much improvement interior-wise...

Who styles these things?

Nothing wrong with what's underneath, it's the bit you can see that offends.
