The new Subaru Impreza Cosworth will have 'supercar humbling' pace, according to the company.

The new model, officially dubbed Cosworth Impreza STI CS400, goes on sale in June. Subaru won't release the price of the new car ahead of the launch, but it is expected to cost around £40,000. The initial production run is limited to just 75 examples.

Subaru says the new model's 2.5-litre flat-four engine develops 395bhp at 5,750rpm, which helps ensure a Ferrari 599-matching 0-62mph sprint time of 3.7 seconds.

By comparison, the standard Impreza WRX STI develops 296bhp at 6,000rpm, and takes 5.2 seconds to reach 62mph.

The Cosworth Impreza will be built at the Cosworth facility in Northamptonshire is fitted with a bespoke braking package featuring six-pot callipers and 355mm discs at the front, developed in conjunction with AP Racing.

Subaru says 'a wide range of further upgrades have been made to the suspension, exhaust and to the donor Impreza’s exterior and interior styling' without going into further details.

Cosworth has a history of super-tuning Subaru's flat-four engine. A few years ago it launched its own high-performance Impreza STI 'short' engine block, which was fitted with Cosworth's own pistons, piston rings, connecting rods and race-spec bearings and built by Cosworth's own engine builders.

It may not be an obvious choice for most buyers, but this four-wheel-drive, sub-£20k hatch does have merit

It's clearly a move into territory once occupied by Ford. A direct blow at the Focus RS 500, but it'll doubtless ruin the PX value of my 330S...
