Three-door coupe begins test work; on sale early 2011

These are the first spy pictures of the upcoming Hyundai Veloster, a radical three-door coupe that will replace the Hyundai Coupe.

The Veloster has three physical hinged doors, similar in concept to the Mini Clubman, but unlike Mini, Hyundai will change the design for RHD markets despite the huge cost of retooling involved.

First seen at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, the Veloster is Hyundai’s answer to the VW Scirocco. It is a similar size to the Scirocco, measuring 4285mm long and 1790mm wide, and will share much of its platform with the front-wheel drive Hyundai i30.

"The production car will have quite dramatic styling - even more so than the concept car," said a source. "Hyundai wants it to be a car that's bought for its looks, and it has been built with teh Scirocco firmly in its sights."

The 2+2 Hyundai Veloster’s flagship engine will be the 168bhp, 1.6-litre turbocharged four-pot petrol engine, complete with stop-start technology and direct fuel-injection, which first appeared in the Hyundai ix-onic concept at Geneva this year. A normally-aspirated unit will also be offered.

The Veloster will go on-sale in the UK in the second quarter of 2011, with prices set to start at around £16,000, the same price as the outgoing Coupe.

Is that one of the new daytime running lights on top? Audi will be jealous.

Yeah, 4 years after the concept was shown! . If prices start at £16k that's for the non-turbo. The top of the range old Coupe was £19.5k in 2008

Re: Radical Hyundai Veloster spied

I had a previous gen (v1) hyundai coupe, and I loved its look..... this...... mmm... I honestly don't know.

I cant tell much from the shots, could look really well eventually. I bought my coupe as I couldnt afford `go` but could afford a bit of `show`, maybe this car will fill that gap for younger owners, or for folks who don't really concern themselves with performance. Best of luck hyundai, the last car brought a bit of respectability, but things have changed a bit since then.
