Load-lugging 508 caught testing under heavy disguise

These are the first spy pictures of the new Peugeot 508 estate.

The pictures give little away about the 508 estate’s styling as it’s been hidden under heavy disguise. However, last week’s 5 by Peugeot concept shows how the forthcoming 508 will look and the concept is likely to remain relatively unchanged for production.

The firm described the 5 by Peugeot concept as “another indication of the changing face of Peugeot" and as "providing an insight into the marque’s future ambitions in the large luxury vehicle segment". As the 508 - the successor to both the 407 and 607 - it will be a Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Insignia and Renault Laguna rival.

The concept was powered by Peugeot’s Hybrid4 technology, which will go into production in 2011 in the Peugeot 3008 and is then likely to follow in the 508 soon after.

The powertrain features a 163bhp 2.0 litre HDi FAP engine linked to a 37bhp electric motor. The combination produces a maximum of 200bhp, an electric only mode for low speed operation and four-wheel drive when required. It averages 74.3 mpg and 99g/km of CO2.

Peugeot says the Hybrid4 technology can be fitted to a range of naturally-aspirated engines according to market requirements, as well as to different models of cars on different platforms.

The 508 will share its all-new chassis with the Citroen C5 and is also expected to feature optional hydropneumatic suspension and adaptive headlamps. Some of the estate’s potential practicality is likely to be sacrificed for style as part of Peugeot’s plans to overhaul its image and designs.

The Peuegot 508 saloon will be unveiled at the Paris motor show this autumn and the estate version will follow later in the year. Both are expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2011.

Re: New Peugeot 508 estate spied

yep a bit of miscalculation on the part of the peugeot while trying to do the job. however i believe they would not try to make the changes as the classic old cars looked. it would be better to keep their own personal style intact.

I like it, I like it alot. A big improvement on the current design theme, I never thought plastic bin liners would look so cool!

What's the point of pictures like these?

Re: New Peugeot 508 estate spied

They need to make sure there's enough room inside. They must have realised now that no-one wants those awful baby bus things they've been pushing.

And it absolutely has to go to Pininfarina to have its looks sorted out. Peugeot's in-house styling department has had long enough to prove that it can't do the job. Let's have good looking Peugeots again.

And they should fire the marketing idiot who decided this shouldn't be called 408.
