Better economy and emissions for the same price

The Skoda Superb is now available with a 140bhp 2.0-litre TDI CR DPF common-rail diesel engine.

The unit replaces the 140bhp TDI PD.

Average fuel consumption is boosted by 4.4mpg to 52.3mpg, while CO2 emissions have been cut by 12g/km to 143g/km.

The standard diesel particulate filter (DPF) ensures it's compliant with Euro V emissions regulations.

Prices will still start at £18,205 – the same as the outgoing engine.

The new model comes with a choice of manual or DSG semi-automatic transmissions, and in S, SE, or Elegance trim.

A welcome addition and a glaring omission from the outset. The current Superb has not been out that long, had I bought one of the Pumpe Duse models I would be more than a little upset by this news.

Great news for the rest of us that are considering this car. I think I'm still favouring the 170 DSG variant though.

A good addition to the range. It cuts emissions, improves MPG and has the same unbeatable price. Its all good. But is there going to be a Superb vRS?

NO NO NO for the superb to be a great car there needs to be at least a 3.0 v6 or even better a v8
There's a 3.6 V6 hooked up to a four wheel drive system. So, it "competes" with Audi/BMW/Merc on comfort, performance and emissions - what it doesn't compete on with the "cooking models" is being FWD to the Merc/BMW RWD. It is also not a "premium product". However, it's significantly cheaper to buy and the interior finishing is first rate. The Superb definitely gives the current Volvo, SAAB, top of the range Ford/Vauxhall products a run for their money. If it was between a Superb 2.0TDI 170 Tourer and a 318d tourer I know where my money would go and I'd be happy to be a Skoda owner
