Villeneuve linked to F1 return

Jacques Villeneuve is set to return to Formula One with Stefan GP, should the Serbian team be granted an entry.

Stefan GP sources have told Autosport that Villeneuve would line up alongside ex-Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima in the team. Karun Chandhok is tipped to be the team’s reserve driver, although the Indian has denied on his Twitter account that a deal was already in place.

Villeneuve was champion in 1997 for Williams, but hasn’t raced in the sport since he left BMW in 2006.

Stefan GP will test for the first time later this month using Toyota’s 2010 chassis design, which it bought off the team when it pulled out of the sport in November.

Stefan GP is still hopeful of receiving an entry for the 2010 season, should either of F1’s new teams not make it to the grid. Campos Meta and USF1 are both believed to be struggling to make the grid in Bahrain and they face expulsion from the championship should they miss a race.

Stefan GP has already sent equipment to Bahrain and Malaysia, in case it should be granted a late entry into F1.
