European car registrations rose 12.9 per cent year-on-year in January - but are still a long way from the figures recorded two years ago.
In total 1,058,868 new cars were registered in the 28 nations covered by data from the European carmakers body.
Although promising, the 12.9 per cent rise in total car sales compared to January 2009 is still 17.3 per cent shy of figures from pre-recession January 2008.
The ACEA carmakers association has said the numbers are: “influenced by the continuing effect of fleet renewal schemes in a number of Western European countries.”
However, Germany’s overall sales fell by 4.3 per cent, a result of scrappage schemes there coming to an end. Similar schemes across Europe are due to end during the course of this year.
