Chinese vehicle production tops a record 12m units

China has produced more than 12 million vehicles in 2009 so far, making it only the third country in history to produce more than 10m units in a calendar year.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), who compiled the figures, say the country’s production output is likely to top 13m units by the end of the year.

China produced a record 9.4m units in 2008, up eight per cent year on year. The US and Japan are the only countries which have managed to top the 10m production mark in the past.

Car sales in China overtook those in the US for the first time last December and despite the global economic downturn, demand continues to rise.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, China’s largest car manufacturer Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation has sold 2.4 million cars this year to date, a 54 per cent increase from last year.
