Land Cruiser V8-based SUV will not be coming to the UK, however

Lexus has released new pics of its second-generation GX460 SUV, which was launched at the Guangzhou motor show in China earlier this week.

The new model is the Asian and Middle Eastern version of the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 sold in European markets, including the UK. The Land Cruiser V8 is offered alongside the GX in the US.

Power comes from an all-new 4.6-litre V8 engine, which replaces the old 4.7-litre unit. It produces 297bhp and 329lb ft and is mated to a six speed automatic ‘box with a sequential shift.

The permanent four-wheel drive in the GX460 uses a torque-sensing centre differential to improve its off-road performance. Under normal driving conditions, power is distributed 40/60, but when it detects on-road ‘performance’ driving, this changes to a split of 30/70. Off road, this can change to 50/50 when it detects the rear wheels are slipping.

The SUV’s body-on-frame construction remains, and the chassis has been strengthened to boost stability. Three different suspension settings are available via Adaptive Variable Suspension: normal, sport and comfort. The GX360 rides on new 18-inch alloy wheels, and the rear ride height can be adjusted depending on the conditions.

An optional Crawl Control system is also offered to help improve off-road performance. It automatically modulates the throttle and brake, allowing the driver to concentrate on the steering. Hill-start Assist Control also features, as does a Downhill Assist Control system.

A Lexus source confirmed there are no plans to bring the GX460 to the UK, due to the Land Cruiser V8’s presence in this market.
