General Motors has announced that it is to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide to improve the company’s long-term prospects.
Over a third of the redundancies will be in the United States, where 3400 salaried employees will lose their jobs. In a statement by General Motors, the company said job losses in other regions will depend on the “staffing levels in the region and market conditions.”
GM currently employs around 73,000 full-time workers worldwide. Around 5000 of those are in the UK and involved in production at Ellesmere Port, the factory earmarked for production of the Vauxhall Ampera, the European version of the Chevrolet Volt.
In addition to the job cuts, General Motors also announced that it is to cut some of its workers’ wages by up to 10 per cent.
Many US executives will face pay cuts of 10 per cent, with reductions of between three and seven per cent for other employees.
The job cuts are part of the restructuring plan submitted to Congress in December last year, when GM said it would look to cut the number of staff it employed in the US by around a third.
