Sonata replacement here in 2010

Autocar has learned more details about the forthcoming Hyundai i40.

The new mid-sized saloon and estate will go on sale in the UK in 2010, replacing the ageing Sonata. According to a Hyundai insider, the i40 will major on style, “and won’t be a car that people buy purely for value.”

Billed as a competitor to the new Vauxhall Insignia and Ford Mondeo, the Hyundai i40 will initially be launched in estate form, with a saloon version following in 2011.

Many of the styling cues seen on the Hyundai Genus concept from the 2006 Geneva show could make it to production on the i40.

The i40 is believed to be based on an all-new platform which will underpin other future Hyundais and Kias, with the newly unveiled 181bhp 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engine being the most popular powerplant.

Other powerplants will include modified versions of the i30’s current 1.6-litre diesel and petrol units, as well as a 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Another (very sensible) reason why a Sonata is minicab drivers dream is the 5 year unlimited mileage warranty! Whilst he could buy a Mondeo for its handling finesse thats not so handy in 3 years time when it invariably starts to fall apart just out of warranty.

Sonata cabs were very popular last time I was in Finland, very spacious in the back and the leather meant they could easily wipe off the remains of a Bambi lunch and too much ludicrously overpriced wine.

Why in the hell would you use a such a capable, nicely built, well put together car like a Sonata as a Taxi cab?
because second hand its cheap due to residuals that go into free fall as soon as Hyundai management sell off their company cars. Because they are the only ones who buy them! The new one on that website looks neat enough, but I still think it won't make that much of an impact on the uk market, even if it is any good.

Looks great, but as it won't have that last 1/10th of on-limit handling finesse it'll always trail the Mondeo.
