Upmarket crossover testing at the 'Ring

Honda’s luxury sub-brand Acura has been spied testing a new ‘crossover’ at the Nurburgring. The car is set to wear a CUV badge and could become a cut-price rival for the BMW X6.

It’s relatively unlikely that this premium 4x4 will ever come to Europe, but the fact that it is testing at the Nurburgring proves that Honda is determined to ensure it has the ‘European’ driving characteristics that will help it appeal to US buyers.

The CUV will go on sale in the US in 2010. Sources suggest that it is powered by the company’s current 3.7-litre V6 engine, but Honda is also considering fitting a new V8 motor.Honda has previously considered launching the Acura brand in Europe - as a potential Lexus rival.

However, current market conditions would seem to make this move more unlikely than ever. Diesel-engined models would need to be introduced for the luxury brand to be relevant in the UK.

The legend could probably do with a bit of a power boost. Also; what's now happening with the NSX powerplant? Could also be popular with smaller manufacturers (Ariel Atom with a Honda V8 anyone?)

Not worried about the CUV, but I like the idea of Honda V8. Could give BMW's M3 high revver a run for its money. More interestingly, what else could it see service in?

Thank goodness for that! The last thing the British car market needs is another of these pointless lash ups.
