Ford ECOnetic range will be unveiled this September

It's all about economy at this year's Frankfurt motor show, which takes place from 13th to the 23rd September. We've already reported on the Corsa Hybrid, Volvo C30 Efficiency and Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion; this is Ford's answer to the environmental issues. The Ford Focus ECOnetic will be powered by the familiar 1.6-litre diesel engine, and be able to achieve 65.7mpg combined economy and 115g/km of CO2 - figures that beat those of the rival Golf Bluemotion.Improved efficiency is achieved mainly by altering the cars aerodynamics. The body has been lowered, an aerodynamic kit (probably not including neon lights) has been added and tyres designed to reduce drag are also standard. Low-viscosity transmission oil is the only new addition to the otherwise standard 107bhp Duratorq diesel unit. The Focus ECOnetic will go on sale in early 2008, but expect to see ECOnetic technology arriving in the entire Ford range following the Focus' launch. Not satisfied with that as a contribution to the environment, Ford also plans to extend the Ethanol-powered Flexifuel range. The Mondeo, Galaxy and S-Max will receive the ability to run on Ethanol E85 or petrol in 2008, making next year the most proliferate ever for grammatically confusing eco-labels.
