These are the first spy pictures of Volkswagen’s new Scirocco, the firm’s Golf-sized coupe and successor for the 90s Corrado, and it looks like the controversial redesign process ordered by new VW boss Martin Winterkorn hasn’t significantly changed the car from the Iroc concept. The car in our scoop pictures, taken during hot-weather testing of the new coupé in Death Valley, is very similar to the Iroc. Two of the car’s most striking features — the deeply sculpted doors and sills and the cab-forward stance — have survived.After VW’s major management overhaul last year, four of the company’s most important new models were sent back to the drawing board for design changes. The Scirocco was one of them, but it looks like any changes have been limited to details at the front and rear of the car. Although the bulk of the disguise is attached to the front and rear, the roofline above the Scirocco’s doors appears to be disguised, so the real car’s window line could be lower than this test car’s.The new Scirocco will sit on another variation of the platform that underpins the Golf and Skoda Octavia. It will have wider tracks and a longer wheelbase to give the car better handling. Power will come from VW’s 1.4-litre Twincharger engine, which is fast becoming the firm’s standard-issue petrol engine. The Iroc came with a 210bhp version and with current production Twincharger units producing 170bhp, this level of power is a distinct possibility.
