Last year UK drivers spent a whopping £114.6 million on speed camera fines. That’s actually a one per cent increase over the previous year, despite fewer penalties having been issued.

The discrepancy is due to fewer speeding tickets having been successfully contested.According to the survey, commissioned by cartographer Philip’s, there was a wide variation between the percentage of tickets issued and fines collected. Surrey managed to collect on only 47 per cent of the tickets it issued.

The most money, £9.45 million, was collected in Greater London, which works out at just £1.26 per resident – the third least. The greatest amount per person was in North Wales, at an average of £5.82 for each resident. Merseyside collected the least per head, at 80p.
