Vauxhall 'Insignia' revealed in unprecedented detail

These are the most detailed pictures yet of Vauxhall’s next Vectra-sized hatchback. The new mid-sized family car will be called Insignia, and will be seen for the first time at next year’s London motor show. We’ve seen several pictures of the car under heavy disguise already, but only last week did our spy photographers catch these revealing shots of both the exterior and interior of the new car. See them all in our gallery.

Revealed: the Vectra’s new cabin

The new Vectra’s cabin looks nearly identical to that of the Opel GTC concept shown at Geneva in March - right down to the sweeping centre console and silver-spoked steering wheel. The next generation Vectra will feature a significantly more attractive and better quality cabin, in order to rival the upmarket feel of Ford’s new Mondeo. Expect ambience lighting, piano black veneer finishing trim, push-button ignition and a host of technological equipment including Bluetooth and radar-activated cruise control.

Good-looking, practical and fun-to-drive

The transformation continues outside, too, with the Vectra adopting a stylish coupé-like silhouette with a high shoulderline and low roofline. The gaping upper and lower front grilles on the car’s nose are also carried over from the GTC.Vauxhall says that the primary focus for its new family hatch will still be the brand's trademark practicality and versatility. Based on GM's new Epsilon 2 platform, the new Vectra will be both wider and taller than the current generation, offering more front and rear passenger space. A clever seating arrangement, previewed by that of the GTC, and maximising boot space, is also on the cards. A four-wheel drive, Insignia VXR is planned for later in the car's life, but only front-wheel driven drivetrains will initially be offered when the car goes on sale in late 2008. Expect a host of engines including four-, five-, and six-cylinder petrols and diesels.
