US-market Flex seven-seater shows a move away from SUVs

Ford is moving away from SUVs and putting more effort into developing crossovers, according to the company’s US boss Mark Fields, speaking at the New York motor show. Proving the point, he then unveiled the all-new Flex, a low-slung US-market-only seven-seater that was previewed two years ago as the Fairlane concept. The real thing goes on sale in summer 2008, powered by a 3.5-litre 240bhp V6 petrol engine, going through a newly developed four-wheel-drive chassis. Behind the bold, brash, but good-looking body there are plenty of clever design touches to tap into the family market – where it will be squarley aimed. A fridge, 2300-song electronic jukebox and a full-length glass roof are among the options. No prizes for guessing, however, that there’s no chance of the Flex being sold in Europe.
