An all-new Jeep Cherokee is being revealed at the New York motor show this week. While off-road ability will continue to be a Cherokee hallmark, the new model aims to be more capable on the road than its crude predecessor. Engineers say revised front suspension and a new five-link rear end provide “nimble, confidence-inspiring handling”.The car has a more rugged shape than its direct predecessor. The oversized bumpers, bluff grille and square headlamps are more reminiscent of the classic Cherokee of the 1980s.Standard equipment levels will be impressive, including remote start, rain-sensing wipers and electric memory seats, as well as ESP, traction control and curtain airbags. Jeep’s MyGIG infotainment system, which includes integrated audio, sat-nav and hands-free phone kit, will also be optional, as will the new ‘Sky Slider’ canvas roof (pictured).Chrysler’s proven 207bhp 3.7-litre V6 engine will be available from the car’s US launch this autumn, with a six-speed manual transmission or four-speed auto. Customers will also be able to specify either permanent or part-time four-wheel drive. UK sales start next year.The new Cherokee will be joined at the New York show by a revised Grand Cherokee featuring Hill Descent Control.
