Hot coupe will cost from 33,475 euro (£30,691) in Germany; no UK pricing yet

Volkswagen has confirmed its new Scirocco R will cost from 33,475 euro (£30,691) when it goes on sale in Germany later this year.

UK pricing has yet to be announced, but it is tipped to cost around £25,000 when it goes on-sale here due to exchange rates. Final pricing is expected to be confirmed later this month.

The VW Scirocco R, which is available to order now in Germany, was launched earlier this year at the Nurburgring 24 Hours race.

The front-wheel drive coupe’s engine is a modified version of the last Golf GTI’s EA113 2.0-litre with direct injection; the latest GTI uses the EA888 2.0-litre. It has a higher compression ratio than the GTI’s engine and was chosen because it’s easier (and cheaper) to modify than the newer powerplant.

The R’s engine gets a new head, uprated pistons and conrods, and higher-pressure injectors. The turbo produces more boost, and there’s a new intercooler to deal with the extra heat.

Combined, these changes give the new engine 261bhp and 258lb ft — and all of the torque is available from 2500rpm through to 5000rpm, one of the advantages of using direct injection on a petrol engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a six-speed, twin-clutch DSG is optional. The R turns in a 0-62mph time of 6.4 sec

If it's going to cost from 33,475 euros (£30,691 at current exchange rates) why would it cost around £25K here due to exchange rates? Surely, if the cost is decided due to exchange rates, it's got to cost around £30-31K here...or am I missing something?

It must be a typo/cock-up, and I'd be surprised if they didn't slightly up the spec of the standard UK model and charge £35k here.

I don't get it. If it's going to cost from 33,475 euros (£30,691 at current exchange rates) why would it cost around £25K here due to exchange rates? Surely, if the cost is decided due to exchange rates, it's got to cost around £30-31K here...or am I missing something?

One question ... Isnt it a bit late to put this car out? Why buy this new and not a 2nd hand S3 which I can get for almost peanuts. It seems to be a very similar car minus 4WD.

I quite like this new Scirocco and my aged father said he loved the look too. I doubt you'd get someone of his years into an S3, so perhaps VW have unwittingly targeted 'old boy' racers with this car...
