AMG version of four-door coupe gunning for next BMW M5

The AMG version of Mercedes’ next CLS has been lapping the Nurburgring again to fine-tune the suspension settings.

The current car, which was a pioneer for the four-door coupe market, is set to be replaced next year and this car will go head to head with BMW’s next M5.

Expect the same 6208cc V8 as the E63 AMG to nestle under the bonnet, with 518bhp and 465lb ft of torque connected to the SL63’s Speedshift MCT seven-speed ’box.

In visual terms Mercedes will play it safe with the CLS replacement, giving its styling an evolutionary step forward instead of any radical changes.

As such, the CLS will retain the low-roofed four-door coupe looks, but it will gain LED lights and technology from the latest E-class.

The AMG CLS will get bigger brakes and wheels, and an aggressive body kit, while four exhausts poke out from the rear to complete the AMG package.

The new CLS is expected to be revealed next year and the AMG version should be here by 2011.

All the other reports say the new CLS will actually have a 5.5L Twin-Turbo V8 with around 550BHP (similar to the forthcoming M5).

if that is true, then the CLS will be able to beat the M5 in the power stakes
