Boy in critical condition after bus hits him while on wrong side of road

Officials in Samoa have confirmed the first road casualty as a consquence of the country's switch to driving on the left.

Last week a boy, 12, was hit by a bus that was driving on the wrong side of the road. He was walking to meet his father at a nearby shop, and local reports suggest he is in a critical condition.

The switch took place on 7 September, and has been marred by a shortage of public transport vehicles adjusted for right-hand drive.

As a result, public services have been seriously reduced, leaving many inhabitants stranded.
