First images leak out ahead of Frankfurt motor show

This is the Audi R8 Spyder, the soft-top version of the R8 V10.

The pictures have been leaked in America, ahead of the car's official unveiling at next week's Frankfurt motor show.

It's known the car will be powered by the 518bhp V10 with 390lb ft of torque that powers the standard R8 V10, and that the Spyder will have a retractable soft-top. No other details have been released.

Styling changes are minimal: the scoops ahead of the rear wheels are a new design, and the windscreen is framed in aluminium.

I'm not sure Ferrari ever did use 'Spyder', and the Lancias were 'Spider" too.

As far as I know, Alfas have always been Spiders, rather than Spyders. Ferrari have used both at times but currently seem to use Spider.

I think most manufacturers with lengthy histories have probably had a Spyder at some stage or another...
