Residuals help Mazda secure top spot

The Mazda MX-5 has come out on top of a survey to find the best used cars of the new millennium.

The research, by a car buying website, used a combination of reliability, performance, running costs, depreciation, owner feedback and customer satisfaction to work out the UK’s best second hand car since 2000.

The Mazda’s residuals helped it take the title - the 1.8i model appreciated in value by £1100 between April and July 2009.

Half of the top ten cars were Japanese, including the Honda CR-V (in second place) and Toyota Yaris (fifth place), while the top European car was the Skoda Octavia in third position.

The Ferrari 360 made an appearance in 39th place thanks to prices dropping below the £40,000 mark, while another surprise entry was the spartan Caterham 7, which took the 49th spot.

Top ten:1. Mazda MX-5 (99-05)2. Honda CR-V (01-06)3. Skoda Octavia (98-05)4. Ford Fiesta (02-08)5. Toyota Yaris (99-05)6. BMW 3-Series (98-07)7. Honda Jazz (01-08)8. Ford Focus (98-04)9. Toyota Corolla (01-07)10. Mercedes-Benz E-Class (02-06)

The Mazda MX-5 is still great fun, and more grown up in its third generation. For pure driving fun, little gets close
