More than half of motorists would rather sit in traffic than use public transport

More than half of all British motorists would risk getting stuck in traffic queues rather than use public transport.

These are the findings of the Congestion Challenge survey revealed today by the RAC Foundation and Ipsos MORI.

Congestion charge fines axed

The report also showed that 13 per cent fewer people now support congestion charges than in 2001, with 44 per cent of people now opposing any kind of scheme, even if the revenue goes towards improving local transport.

Despite this, 77 per cent of motorists would support an increase in the number and frequency of buses as a way of tackling congestion. Only a third of drivers think that they will use public transport to make a journey currently made by car during the next 12 months.
