Extra funding to tackle car theft and fraud

The government has agreed to provide £300,000 of funding to fight car fraud and theft over the next year.

The money will be used to run the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS) in Ryton, West Midlands.

AVCIS research shows that although car crime has fallen, the theft of premium vehicles remains the same.

The unit is tasked with tackling car crime on a nationwide scale and has so far recovered over 1200 vehicles, worth £14m.

Home Office Minister Alan Campbell MP will today visit AVCIS to agree the funding. The head of AVCIS, Acting Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hooper, welcomed the cash.

“The funding from the Home Office will ensure we can make further progress in targeting criminal activity and driving down vehicle enabled crime, which in turn will have a positive impact on society and crime rates in general," he said.
