US-market Holden Commodore could be revived

The Pontiac G8, the American version of the Holden Commodore, could earn a reprieve as the Chevrolet Caprice.

General Motors decided to phase out the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010, including the G8 (which is also sold in the UK as the Vauxhall VXR8). Aussie maker Holden had been expecting to export 70,000 VE Commodores a year, in a deal worth £500 million.

However Bob Lutz, newly reinstated GM vice-chairman, is understood to be behind a plan to rebrand the G8 as a Caprice, despite CEO Fritz Henderson repeatedly saying he's "not a fan of rebadging”.

"The last time we looked at [the G8], we decided that we would continue to import it as a Chevrolet," Lutz said. "It is kind of too good to waste."

Lutz also said the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe and CTS-V wagon were still in the pipeline.
