More cars sold in China than in US

Car sales in China increased by 48 per cent in June compared with a year ago, according to latest figures.

872,900 vehicles were sold last month, the biggest leap since February 2006, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers revealed.

The huge jump was fuelled by the country’s strong economy and government incentives such as subsidies to trade in older vehicles.

Car sales in China were higher than those in the US for the first time in December of last year.

The trend continued in June, with 859,847 units bought in America.

"It was really hard for our auto industry to achieve such a proud result against a backdrop of general gloom in the international auto industry," said the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
